Sarasota Memorial Health Care System

Sarasota Memorial improves nurse-physician communication with smartphones.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System was first in the country to use Voalte Me for physician texting. Today, physicians, nursing managers and administrators are relying on Voalte Me to send and receive secure text messages. They communicate about patient care, strategize on how to alleviate weekend crowding in the Emergency Department, and disseminate group messages to the staff. And they do all this from outside the hospital, using their own personal smartphones equipped with Voalte Me.

Voalte Me allows physicians to be more easily accessible to our nursing colleagues. I no longer have to be overhead-paged to receive an incoming call.

The nurses have embraced the technology and have given us great feedback. Voalte One makes them better able to respond quickly to patients’ needs.

Case study.

New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit requires changes in the way nurses receive alarms and alerts.

The old NICU at Sarasota Memorial held 20 infant beds in two large, open-bay rooms. Nurses were assigned to specific babies, yet when an alarm sounded, assistance from other nurses and support staff was just a step or two away. But change was coming: The hospital was building a new patient tower, and the Women and Children’s Services department was slated to relocate to three different floors in the new building.

To accommodate family bonding and reduce noise, the new NICU was designed in line with the recent construction trend toward single-family rooms. While the new unit offers all the latest in neonatal care and family bonding, it also raises some communication challenges. Nurses needed a new way to work with each other, receive alarms and alerts from patient monitors, and communicate with Labor and Delivery and other units.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care sees immediate benefits of texting.

Sarasota Memorial selected the Medical Respiratory Unit to evaluate the Voalte One™ solution. At the time, the unit was using overhead paging to contact clinicians after experiencing disappointing results with a mobile voice badge solution.

Voalte collaborated with Sarasota Memorial to create a deployment plan that included workflow analysis, clinician training, product installation and go-live support.

The plan also detailed the direct integration between Voalte One and Sarasota Memorial’s WestCall® nurse call system, Connexall middleware and their Wi-Fi network.
