Post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are associated with increased cost and poor outcomes. Atelectasis contributes significantly to PPCs in the acute care setting.  Effective interventions may help decrease the incidence and cost burden. This review article reviews the challenges encountered in the recognition, prevention, and management of perioperative atelectasis.
